Tom was a boy in fifth grade who often got into trouble in his math class. He sat and talked, disrupted(擾亂)the class, and even fell asleep. He seemed disconnected in group activities. Most teachers would immediately write this student off as their problem child for the year and call it a day. However, his teacher, Miss Smith was different. She wanted to understand what was going on.

She did many activities in hopes of getting more information. She told the students that a competition between the boys and girls would take place in her class on each Friday with prizes (candy) for the winners.

The first week the students were greatly interested and listened carefully in her class. Everyone wanted to win. Interestingly enough, Tom had his hand up the whole time trying to get a turn. Yet, Miss Smith waited and waited. Finally she paired Tom in the competition against the best girl student in the class. As the teacher placed a question on the blackboard, most of the students began to shake their heads—this was a question they had never covered in class. Both the boy and the girl started slow... thinking of the answer to the question. Tom finished the difficult question just seconds before the girl and won the competition. The boys jumped out of their desk, cheering. Within the week the teacher had Tom out of her class and added to the middle-school academic games team. It turned out that Tom wasn't bad, he was bored!

Recognizing potential (潛力)is not always easy but the end results can be encouraging and surprising.

"Helicopter parenting" describes a type of raising children where parents are over-protective and do too much. The parents who can give their children directions at any moment from anywhere.

Lythcott-Haims wrote a book in which she gives readers a closer look at this parenting style. She also explains why parents should stop it.

Helicopter parenting, she says, comes in three types:

1. The over-protective parent

"Parents who think the world is unsafe, therefore, they must protect and prevent."

2. The over-directive parent.

"The second type is the over-directive type-the parent who says, 'I know best what leads to success and you will do as I say. You'll study these topics, you'll do these activities and you will be highly achieving at all of it.”

3. "The third type is the concierge parent-the parent who just wants to make life easier--from waking their kid up, to having those tough conversations with the teacher, to doing the homework for the kid.”

Lythcott-Haims warns this kind of parenting has many short-term wins but long-term costs that harm the child. Lythcott-Haims suggests letting your child get a little hurt. She uses an area-a playground. "If you’re at the playground next to them, if they fall, you catch them and they do not suffer. If you're helping with your kid’s homework, they are going to get better grade. Those are the short-term wins. The long-term cost is-if your kid doesn't learn how to manage their own body on a playground, which is a lesson only learned by falling a few times- your child may not feel able to do things. And they will give up easily when faced with a difficult problem.”

26. What are the three types of parents who are over-protective and do too much?

27. What did Lythcott-Haims write about in her book?

28. Why did Lythcott-Haims talk about the playground?

29. What is the passage mainly about?

30. What suggestion do you want to make to stop "helicopter parenting"?
