The origin of Halloween can be traced back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, which was celebrated on November 1st. This church-sanctioned holiday coincided with the existing pagan celebration of Samhain, leading to the adoption of many of its traditions by the Christian population.

Over time, the evening before All Saints' Day, October 31st, came to be known as All Hallows' Eve or Halloween. In the United States, Halloween gained popularity during the 19th century due to immigration from Ireland and Scotland, where the tradition had been widely practiced for centuries. Today, Halloween is celebrated around the world with trick-or-treating, costume parties, haunted houses, and other festive activities.
