Yuan Longping is known as China’s “father of hybrid rice”. It’s said that in China, we eat depending on “Two Ping” ---- Deng Xiaoping, who made the policy of System of Production Responsibility, & Yuan Longping, who invented hybrid rice.
Yuan Longping, who was born in September, 1930, graduated from Agriculture Department in Southwest Agricultural Institute. He has been working on agriculture education & the research into hybrid rice since he left the institute.
In the 1960s, when China was suffering from serious famine, he came up with the idea of hybrid rice, which has a high yield ( or output). Ten years later, he succeeded in inventing a new species that produced a 20 percent higher yield than common types of rice.
Yuan devoted himself to the research into agriculture, & was honored by UNESCO & FAO(聯(lián)合國(guó)教科文組織）. Although he is 74 years old, he is still working on the research into agriculture.

He was worthy of being a leading figure in the prevention and control of respiratory infectious diseases in China. Regardless of his own life danger, Zhong Nanshan was given the honorary title of "anti non hero" by Guangzhou City in 2003.

出生于北平，1953年畢業(yè)于西南農(nóng)學(xué)院。1964年開(kāi)始研究雜交水稻，1973年實(shí)現(xiàn)三系配套，1974年育成第一個(gè)雜交水稻強(qiáng)優(yōu)組合南優(yōu)2號(hào)，1975年研制成功雜交水稻制種技術(shù)，從而為大面積推廣雜交水稻奠定了基礎(chǔ)。1985年提出雜交水稻育種的戰(zhàn)略設(shè)想，為雜交水稻的進(jìn)一步發(fā)展指明了方向。1987年任863計(jì)劃兩系雜交稻專(zhuān)題的責(zé)任專(zhuān)家，1995年研制成功兩系雜交水稻，1997年提出超級(jí)雜交稻育種技術(shù)路線，2000年實(shí)現(xiàn)了農(nóng)業(yè)部制定的中國(guó)超級(jí)稻育種的第一期目標(biāo)，2004年提前一年實(shí)現(xiàn)了超級(jí)稻第二期目標(biāo)。1995年當(dāng)選為中國(guó)工程院院士。先后獲得“國(guó)家特等發(fā)明獎(jiǎng)”、“首屆最高科學(xué)技術(shù)獎(jiǎng)”等多項(xiàng)國(guó)內(nèi)獎(jiǎng)項(xiàng)和聯(lián)合國(guó)“科學(xué)獎(jiǎng)”、“沃爾夫獎(jiǎng)”、“世界糧食獎(jiǎng)”等11項(xiàng)國(guó)際大獎(jiǎng)。出版中、英文專(zhuān)著6部，發(fā)表論文60余篇。

Yuan Longping was born in Beijing in 1930. His ancestral home is in De'an County, Jiujiang, Jiangxi Province. During the Second Sino-Japanese War and the Chinese Civil War, he moved with his family and attended school in many places, including Hunan, Chongqing, Hankou and Nanjing.
Yuan Longping is a Chinese agronomist, known for developing the first hybrid rice varieties in the 1970s.
Hybrid rice has since been grown in dozens of countries in Africa, America, and Asia—providing a robust food source in areas with a high risk of famine. For his contributions, Yuan is always called the "Father of Hybrid Rice" by the Chinese media.
