The history of the English language really started with the arrival of three Germanic tribes who invaded Britain during the 5th century AD. These tribes, the Angles, the Saxons and the Jutes, crossed the North Sea from what today is Denmark and northern Germany. At that time the inhabitants of Britain spoke a Celtic language. But most of the Celtic speakers were pushed west and north by the invaders - mainly into what is now Wales, Scotland and Ireland. The Angles came from Englaland and their language was called Englisc - from which the words "England" and "English" are derived.

The earliest form of English was called Old English (Anglo-Saxon). It was very different from Modern English and it is difficult for us to understand. There were few written records in Old English but we do have some manuscripts such as Beowulf, an epic poem about heroes and monsters.

During the Middle Ages (from about 1066 until about 1476), the Normans conquered England and French became the official language of the land. However, English continued to be spoken by the lower classes and by country people. Gradually, English began to change under the influence of French. This period is known as Middle English. One important event during this time was the invention of printing. This helped to standardize the spelling and grammar of English.

Modern English developed during the Early Modern Period (about 1500-1700). During this time, there was a great increase in trade and travel between countries. This led to a greater need for a common language. English gradually became the dominant language in many parts of the world due to the power of the British Empire.
