able，capable
這一對(duì)詞都是形容詞，又都含有“能夠”、“能干”之意，但涵義和使用場(chǎng)合有所不同，大致有如下幾點(diǎn)區(qū)別：
（一）在用作定語(yǔ)表示“能干的”意味時(shí)，able所描述的范圍較概括，able 最常用詞，多用于褒義，著重指多方面的，經(jīng)常性的，或潛在性的能力。有時(shí)也指高超、非凡的能力。capable所描述的范圍較專注，因?yàn)榍罢咧改橙寺斆髂芨?，有多才多藝的概括涵義；后者僅指具有應(yīng)付某一特指工作要求的能力。例：
She is the ablest girl I’ve ever met. 她是我見(jiàn)到過(guò)的最有才干的姑娘。
She is an able teacher
她是個(gè)能干的教師。

班上最有才華的學(xué)生
He made a very able speech. 他作了一篇很出色的講話。
He is an able man. 他是一個(gè)能干的人。
She is a capable teacher．

capable 語(yǔ)氣弱于able，指有能力、有潛力或有條件做某事，常與of連用。
She was perfectly capable of taking care of herself. 她完全有能力照顧自己。
（二）able指“能夠”，是一時(shí)之現(xiàn)象；capable常用以指“能力”，是經(jīng)常的現(xiàn)象。如：
I shall not be able to come to the office tomorrow．
明天我不能到辦公室來(lái)（指由于某種原因而暫時(shí)不能來(lái)）。

She is incapable of manual labour．
她不能從事體力勞動(dòng)（指由于某種長(zhǎng)期或經(jīng)常的原因，例如患病而不能勞動(dòng)）。
（三）指某人（物）能作某事時(shí)，able之后接動(dòng)詞不定式，capable之后接介詞of。例如：
A good auditorium will assure that the sound is able to be heard from every seat.
好的禮堂能保證每個(gè)座位的聽(tīng)眾都能聽(tīng)到聲音。
We are able to get back to town before dark．
我們能夠天黑之前趕回市區(qū)。
The larger firm was capable of providing a better range of services.

（四）capable除表示“有能力的”意味外，還可用以表示“有可能的”涵義，able則沒(méi)有這個(gè)用法。如：

3.adequate適當(dāng)?shù)?、足夠的、合適的adequate中文意思可以翻譯為適當(dāng)?shù)?、充足的、足夠的。adequate其實(shí)如果翻譯成「合適的」可能會(huì)更為貼切，例如數(shù)量合不合適、理由合不合適….等等。例：Ididn’thaveadequatetimetoprepare。
The situation is capable of improvement．
此情況有可能好轉(zhuǎn)。
She has an aged parent who's capable of being very difficult.
她有一個(gè)年邁的父親，可能會(huì)很不好相處。
The public are capable of holding a number of apparently contradictory attitudes.

（五） able 一般用作正面意義，指好人好事；capable 則是中性詞，既可指好事，亦可指壞事，例如在下例中，capable of anything是表示“任何壞事都做得出來(lái)”之意：
That guy is capable of anything！
那家伙什么勾當(dāng)都會(huì)干得出來(lái)！

（六） able的反義詞是unable；capable的反義詞是incapable，足夠的怎么讀英語(yǔ)單詞。另一點(diǎn)值得注意的是，able的名詞是 ability，謝謝理解英語(yǔ)翻譯，義：“能力”（the power to do）；capable的名詞是capability 或 capacity，前者義：“具有從事某事的能力”；后者義：“容量”或“受容力”。需要在此指出的是，ability是可以通過(guò)練習(xí)或鍛煉獲得的，通常具有指具體的某種能力；而capability則是固有的能力，它與練習(xí)或鍛煉無(wú)關(guān)，還指軍事能力。通過(guò)例句的對(duì)比，達(dá)到融會(huì)貫通：
